Analytical Portfolio

This page showcases examples of my analytics and diagnostics work, highlighting products I led ("Key Diagnostics") and made significant contributions to ("Additional Analytics").

I have a strong background in working with public and proprietary data, calculating macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators, and conducting analytics at the national, subnational, and firm-level.  My specialty is translating a stakeholder research question into diagnostics that help drive conversations and reform.

My Process & Approach

My approach to building and delivering analytical tools often involve the following steps:

  1. A cleaned and harmonized master database

  2. A customizable and intuitive interface that builds graphs and visualizations based on user inputs

  3. Assorted client-ready presentations and summary reports.

  4. Knowledge events and trainings when applicable.

1. Key Diagnostics

01

Country Growth Scan

The Country Growth Scan produces 100 graphs against a series of key macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators to help country economists understand a country's economic growth experience.  It was developed as a first-step standardized diagnostic tool for all World Bank country economists working on Country Economic Memorandums (CEMs).

02

Subnational Growth Scan

The Subnational Growth Scans are regional level diagnostic tools produced for a sample of countries hoping to understand variations in economic growth across regions. They employ the same methodology and structure as the Country Growth Scan tool.

03

FDI Snapshot

The FDI Snapshot aggregates FDI panel data and helps investment practitioners and private sector experts understand the role of foreign direct investment in a given economy.

04

Investment Snapshot

The Investment Snapshot is an expanded version of the FDI Snapshot tool, created with macroeconomists in mind. It includes the same sections as the FDI Snapshot, as well as additional macroeconomic data on the role of investments in a country's GDP.

2. Additional Analytics

05

Export & Investment Constraints

Under guidance of a team of senior economists, I supported the build and implementation of two tools that benchmark a country's potential to attract FDI to key sectors and diversify/upgrade its exports. The tools assess a country's performance along key areas of demand, production factor, inputs, and institutions.

The tools were used in early methodological iterations of the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Country Private Sector Diagnostic (CPSD). The lead economists subsequently wrote a research paper explaining the approach, of which I delivered a final tool that accompanied the paper.

06

Economic Sector and Value Chain Assessments

For investment promotion, countries often focus on economic sectors with both high potential for advancing development objectives, as well as comparative attractiveness to foreign investors.

I built a dynamic scoring tool to aid World Bank Investment Policy & Promotions teams conducting sector assessments. The tool operationalizes a sector scan methodology developed by the IFC and World Bank. The tool functions as an aggregator of team research as well as a dialogue tool between internal colleagues and external stakeholders. Colleagues input their qualitative, quantitative, and field research findings and the tool aggregates scores and maps relative sector performances.

07

Global Tax Incentives Database

The Global Tax Incentives Database is a panel database on the existence of tax incentives across countries and sectors. Specifically, the database provides information on 160 countries, broken down by 22 economic sectors, 4 types of fiscal incentives, for the period 2009-2015.I developed the database under the leadership of a Senior Economist and support of three summer interns.

08

Global ESG Data Portal

At KPMG, I managed the Global ESG Data Program and built a SharePoint portal that centralized global ESG data for KPMG firms. The portal included access and how-to guides for ESG databases, usage details and information on ESG data providers, suggested quantitative methods, and a catalogue of ESG Insights that off-shore researchers could produce for requesting firms.

09

Fiscal Expenditure Analytics

I supported a World Bank economist with enhancement of his fiscal analysis tools for understanding the intricacies of foreign government spending.

Additionally, I guided a team of economists on how to build a comprehensive international database on public expenditures, to aid the World Bank's Public Expenditure Reviews.
